How much is enough? The question every future retiree asks

One of the most common questions people ask when planning for retirement is: “How much money will I actually need?”

The honest answer is that there’s no one-size-fits-all figure. Your ideal retirement income will depend on the lifestyle you want, your existing savings and pensions, and how you expect your spending to change over time.

While everyone’s circumstances are different, taking the time to understand your future income needs can help you plan with greater confidence.

Start with the lifestyle you want

Rather than focusing on a target pension pot, it can be more helpful to think about the lifestyle you’d like to enjoy in retirement.

Do you plan to travel regularly? Help your children or grandchildren financially? Continue hobbies, or perhaps take up new ones? Equally, some costs such as commuting or mortgage repayments may reduce once you stop working.

The latest Retirement Living Standards estimate that a single person would typically need around £13,400 a year for a minimum lifestyle, £31,700 for a moderate lifestyle and £43,900 for a comfortable retirement. For couples, the estimated annual income rises to approximately £21,600, £43,900 and £60,600 respectively. These figures aren’t targets, but they provide a useful benchmark to help you consider the lifestyle you’d like in retirement and whether your current savings are on track.

Consider all your sources of income

Your  income in retirement is likely to come from a combination of sources, including your personal  pension(s), workplace pensions, the State Pension and any personal savings,  investments or Assets which generate a passive income such as a property portfolio.

Before making any decisions, it’s worth taking stock of everything you’ve built up over the years. If you’ve changed jobs several times, you may have more than one pension. If you’re unsure where they are, the Government’s Pension Tracing Service can help you reconnect with lost pension pots.

Having a complete picture of your finances makes it much easier to understand whether you’re on track to achieve the retirement you want.

Don’t forget about inflation

Retirement can last 20 years or more, so it’s important to remember that the cost of living is likely to increase over time.

While no one can predict future inflation, building flexibility into your retirement plan can help ensure your income continues to meet your needs in later life. Reviewing your pension regularly and adjusting your plans where necessary can make a significant difference over the long term.

Make informed decisions about your pension

Retirement planning isn’t something you do once and forget about. Your circumstances, financial priorities and even the wider economic environment can all change over time.

Regularly reviewing your pension savings, expected retirement income and planned retirement date can help you stay on track and give you the opportunity to make adjustments if needed. The MoneyHelper tool also offers free, impartial guidance to help people aged 50 and over understand their retirement options before accessing their pension.

Taking professional financial advice can also help ensure your retirement income is structured in a way that supports your long-term objectives.
